What Makes a Clear Bag “Stadium Approved”?
“Stadium approved” isn’t just a marketing phrase — it refers to a specific set of requirements that most major US venues enforce at entry points. Security staff physically inspect bags at the gate, and if yours doesn’t meet the rules, it doesn’t get in. Neither do you — unless you go back to the car.
Here’s exactly what venues look for, and why our bags are built around these requirements from the start.

The NFL Clear Bag Policy — The Industry Standard
The NFL introduced its clear bag policy across all 32 stadiums in 2013, and it quickly became the blueprint that most other venues followed. If you understand the NFL rules, you understand about 90% of the policies you’ll encounter.
| Rule | What it means |
| Bag must be clear | Contents fully visible through all sides. Tinted, frosted, or opaque panels are not allowed — even if the bag is mostly clear. |
| Maximum size | 12″ x 6″ x 12″ (approx. 30 x 15 x 30 cm). Bags larger than this will be turned away regardless of material. |
| Approved materials | Clear PVC or vinyl only. Mesh, fabric, leather, or any other non-transparent material is not accepted as the main body of the bag. |
| Small clutch exception | Most NFL stadiums also allow one small non-clear clutch up to 4.5″ x 6.5″ in addition to the approved clear bag. |
| No logos / decorations blocking view | Large brand logos, opaque patches, or decorative panels that obscure the contents may be rejected at the discretion of security. |
All Byhandart clear bags are made from transparent PVC and designed within the 12″ x 6″ x 12″ limit. Always check the specific rules for your venue before the event.
NBA, NCAA, MLB & Concert Venue Rules
The NFL policy is the most widely referenced, but other venues have their own versions. Most follow the same logic — transparent bag, limited size — with minor differences:
| Venue type | Typical max size | Notes |
| NFL stadiums | 12″ x 6″ x 12″ | Small clutch up to 4.5″ x 6.5″ also allowed |
| NBA arenas | Varies — often 14″ x 14″ x 6″ | Some arenas follow NFL rules exactly; check individually |
| NCAA stadiums | 12″ x 6″ x 12″ | Most follow NFL policy. High-profile events may be stricter. |
| MLB stadiums | 16″ x 16″ x 8″ (most) | MLB is slightly more lenient on size in most parks |
| Concert venues | Varies widely | Some allow up to 12″ x 12″, others restrict to under 6″. Always verify. |
| Music festivals | Usually 12″ x 6″ x 12″ | Coachella, Lollapalooza follow NFL-style rules |
Important: Venue policies can change between seasons and even between events at the same venue. Always check the official FAQ on the venue’s website before you go.
What Actually Happens at the Bag Check
If you’ve never been through a clear bag security check before, here’s what to expect so there are no surprises at the gate.
The Inspection Process
Security staff at the entry point will visually inspect your bag — they don’t usually need to touch anything because the contents are visible. They’re checking for prohibited items and confirming the bag itself meets the venue’s material and size requirements.
Having a clear bag makes this process dramatically faster. Instead of opening pockets and digging through compartments, the staff can see your essentials at a glance. Most clear bag checks take under 10 seconds.
If Your Bag Doesn’t Pass
If your bag is rejected — usually because it’s opaque, too large, or made of a non-approved material — you typically have a few options:
- Return it to your car if you drove and parking is close
- Leave it in a paid bag storage service (some large venues offer this)
- In some cases, use the small clutch exception if you have a qualifying small bag

There’s no on-site solution in most cases. This is exactly why getting the right bag before you go matters — and why our clear bags are designed around venue requirements from the start.
Frequently Asked Questions — Stadium Clear Bag Policy
Are holographic or glitter clear bags stadium approved?
It depends on how much of the bag is opaque. Our holographic/glitter hybrid styles have transparent PVC as the main panel — contents remain fully visible. Accent trim (holographic edges, glitter detailing) is generally accepted because it doesn’t block the view of the interior. That said, always check with your specific venue if you’re unsure.
Can I bring two bags to a stadium?
At most NFL and NCAA venues, yes — you’re allowed one clear bag (up to 12″ x 6″ x 12″) plus one small non-clear clutch (up to 4.5″ x 6.5″). Some venues restrict entry to one bag only. Check your venue’s policy before assuming you can bring both.
My venue says bags must be under 6″ — which Byhandart bag should I get?
Go for our Clear Mini Clutch or Clear Mini Crossbody (7.5″ x 5″ x 2.5″). Both pass even the strictest size restrictions. You’ll fit your phone, cards, keys, and a small essential or two — which covers most game-day needs.
Do I need to empty my clear bag at the security check?
No. The whole point of a clear bag policy is that security can verify contents visually without emptying the bag. You may be asked to hold it up or open the zipper briefly, but a full unpack is not standard procedure at clear-bag checkpoints.
Are clear bags required at Coachella and other music festivals?
Major festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza have adopted clear bag policies similar to the NFL standard. Requirements can change year to year, so always verify on the event’s official website before you buy.
Will a clear bag set off the metal detector?
The PVC material of the bag itself doesn’t trigger metal detectors. The hardware — zipper pulls, D-rings, chain straps — might cause a brief check, just as any metal accessory would. This is normal and not specific to clear bags.
Can I use my stadium clear bag as an everyday purse?
Absolutely — many of our customers do. The crossbody style in particular works well for travel, theme parks, and casual days out. If privacy is a concern, a small fabric inner pouch keeps personal items discreet while still leaving the bag transparently clear for venue checks.
